Difficulties in isolating people with dementia and in formulating their own symptoms, shared toilets and under-staffing are other reasons that emerge in the study.

It is based on interviews with 17 people - unit managers, care staff, nurses and others - who worked with and at five of the most severely corona-affected homes in Västerås.

These are the nursing homes Ankaret, Rösegården, Pilfinksgården and Tujagården as well as Rönnoxelgatan's LSS group home.

Three are municipally run and two are run privately.

The study has been done in parallel with but independent of IVO's major review, however, the report will be shared with the authority according to the director of care and nursing.

- The main purpose, however, is to learn lessons, he says in the clip.

In the clip, Håkan Falknäs, medically responsible nurse in the city of Västerås, also

says that the pandemic has made it even clearer that collaboration with healthcare needs to be better.
