Why such an increase?
Between May 1, when the first wave of the Covid-19 epidemic was fading, and September 21, when the second was taking hold, more than 20,630 deaths were recorded in Hauts-de- France, the largest increase observed in mainland France (+ 3% compared to 2019), announced this Tuesday, INSEE.
The densest departments
The statistics institute observed this increase "from August with the strong heat wave, then in September with the epidemic rebound linked to Covid-19".
At the departmental level, the number of deaths is up slightly in Pas-de-Calais (+ 4.4%), Nord (+ 4.7%) and Oise (+ 5.4%).
Between August 1 and August 15, regional mortality jumped by + 27.6%.
During the first three weeks of September, the increase in the number of deaths already reached 3.7%.
"This increase is concentrated in the densest departments," notes INSEE.
