The head of the White House referred to the results of a study by the Gallup Institute entitled "Americans' Opinion on Whether Their Situation Has Improved or Worsened Over the Last Four Years."

The respondents were asked only one question: "In your opinion, has the situation of your family improved or worsened over the past four years?"

According to the study, which was conducted from September 14 to 28, "a clear majority of registered voters (56%) said they are now in a better position than four years ago" (when ex-President Barack Obama and former Vice President Joe Biden).

"At the same time, 32% believe that their situation has worsened," the institute said in a report.

Reportedly, in 2012, before the electoral college re-elected Obama and Biden (the poll was conducted from December 14 to 17), 45% of Americans surveyed said they were better financially than four years ago.

Data ambiguity

The experts were skeptical about the results of this study.

Andrei Sidorov, head of the Department of International Organizations and World Political Processes at the Faculty of World Politics at Moscow State University, noted that such polls "must be treated with caution."

“If we talk about the category of the American population who lives below the poverty line - there are up to 40 million of them, they, as a rule, do not have medical insurance.

People like this are not covered by polls like the one recently conducted by the Gallup Institute.

Most of the questions asked are the middle class, which will mainly talk about improving their situation.

Therefore, it would be a mistake to consider this kind of data to be completely objective, "the analyst said in an interview with RT.

Political scientist Alexander Asafov adheres to a similar point of view.

In his opinion, this kind of research does not take into account all groups of the US population and it would be wrong to draw conclusions about how all Americans feel about themselves.

“This is the average temperature in the hospital.

In fact, people feel differently.

Although such polls may still show some dynamics, you should not completely trust them, ”the expert said in a conversation with RT.

However, this data, of course, is beneficial to Trump - he can use them in his election campaign, Asafov added.

"Live in a pandemic"

At the same time, analysts believe that if the data of the Gallup Institute to some extent correspond to reality, then in the improvement of the financial situation of the Americans there is also the merit of the head of the White House.

According to Andrei Sidorov, "the economic policy of Donald Trump throughout his four years in power was really aimed at reviving the American economy and industry."

“As part of this course, the administration of the 45th President of the United States carried out a tax reform, in my opinion, quite successfully.

It provided new business opportunities that made it easier for ordinary taxpayers.

Trump himself says that through this measure, small and medium-sized businesses began to develop, ”the expert said.

Recall that on December 22, 2017, Donald Trump signed the law on the largest tax reform in the history of the United States.

Previously, the bill was approved by Congress, both chambers of which at that time were controlled by Republicans.

The document envisages easing the tax burden for taxpayers, primarily for businesses, corporations and enterprises.

In particular, the law reduces the tax on the profits of legal entities from 35 to 21%, reduces the tax on funds returned to the country from the activities of legal entities abroad: from 35 to 15.5% for cash and up to 8% for non-cash.

In addition, tax deductions for capital expenditures were introduced for legal entities.

In July 2018, US Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin said Trump's proposed tax reform has played a key role in the current US economic success.

The tax cut "has become a source of optimism for more Americans, who now have more opportunities," he said.

According to Mnuchin, over 500 companies announced the accrual of bonuses, salary increases, pension contributions and other payments to their employees.

Meanwhile, Sidorov noted that "with all the positive effect of the tax reform, one cannot but take into account its weaknesses."

“In particular, it hit the US treasury by stimulating government deficits and debt.

Nevertheless, in general, one can believe in the thesis that part of the population is doing better financially than during the Obama and Biden presidency.

Indeed, there is a feeling that the US business is reviving, despite the pandemic, and the Western states are returning jobs, ”the expert said.

As the US Labor Department reported on its Facebook page, the unemployment rate in the United States fell to 7.9% in September.

In August this figure reached 8.4%, and in April - 14.7%.

According to the US department, 661 thousand new jobs were created in the United States in September, although 850 thousand were predicted.

Recall that the United States continues to rank first in the world in the number of cases of coronavirus.

According to Johns Hopkins University, to date, more than 7.7 million infected people have been identified in the United States, almost 215 thousand people with a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 have died.

Sidorov also believes that Trump's signing of documents aimed at mitigating the negative economic consequences of the coronavirus pandemic also benefited the lives of Americans.

In particular, according to one of the documents, it is planned to postpone payroll taxes until the end of this year for those Americans who earn less than $ 100 thousand a year.

At the same time, the "generally good situation in the world economy" before the pandemic also influenced the improvement of the situation of some Americans, the analyst said.

“The situation has evolved without major economic downturns, starting in 2013, when the consequences of the 2008 crisis began to fade away, and right up to the problems caused by the coronavirus pandemic in 2020.

However, thinking Americans cannot blame Trump for the COVID-19 epidemic and its consequences, despite the Democrats' attempts to prove the opposite, ”Sidorov said.

Alexander Asafov also does not exclude that the Americans really began to assess their financial situation more positively.

“The fact is that US citizens have basically got used to living in a pandemic, which is now not as acute as at the beginning of the year.

In addition, the United States experienced a peak in racially motivated protests.

Now these topics in society have become less resonant and flammable, ”the expert noted.

In a positive way

According to Andrei Sidorov, the Gallup poll data "can help Trump get re-elected."

“The head of the White House will bet on his economic achievements in the political race.

And this kind of research will help him to support these theses.

The headquarters of the American leader will definitely use this data in order to position Trump as the president who made America great again, primarily in the economic sphere, in industry, although this is far from the case.

But it is possible that the continuation of the Trump line can really lead to the strengthening of the production base in the United States, ”the analyst said.

Alexander Asafov, in turn, predicted that Trump, being at the last stage of his election campaign, "will comment on the extremely positive indicators" of the polls.

“Trump uses what fits into his picture of the world.

In this case, the Gallup figures show that Americans are better off under him.

And this information is taken as a basis without looking at the pitfalls of the study, ”the expert concluded.
