Pieter Wezeman is a senior researcher at Sipri.

SVT Nyheter has shown him parts of the documentary Mullvaden - Undercover in North Korea, where years of infiltration and unique recordings of business meetings show how North Korea's arms exports can go.

- What I see is a surprisingly open attempt to get people involved in blatantly illegal arms sales.

Illegal in the sense that it is a clear violation of what the UN Security Council has decided, ie that there should be no kind of arms exports from North Korea to anyone.

Weapon list surprises

During a meeting in North Korea, the participants in the documentary are assigned a kind of "menu" of weapons that can be bought.

- In my current job, I have not seen such a list before.

I have seen similar in other contexts, but honestly it is surprising to see that such a list exists, says Pieter Wezeman.

He says he first thought it would be about lighter weapons and ammunition.

But on the list of available weapons are grenades, tanks, weapons for electronic warfare - and scudrobots.

- They are obviously still willing to sell complete ballistic missiles with a range of over 1000 kilometers - these are no small things.

“Not very sophisticated”

Instead of selling assembled weapons, which are difficult to hide during shipping, a plan is launched to build a factory on a private island in Uganda.

Drawings and models are created across the facility - but their simple character makes Wezeman react.

- It does not look very sophisticated and one wonders if it is a trick to deceive someone to invest.

At the same time, it is no news that North Korea has set up factories in other countries.

- They have helped both Iran and Syria to establish ballistic missile manufacturing facilities.

They have the expertise to export not only whole weapons but also the production plans to produce it elsewhere.

The Mole - Undercover in North Korea is a documentary series by Mads Brügger produced by Piraya film and Wingman media in co-production with BBC, DR, NRK and SVT.

It can be seen on SVT Play.
