The streets of Madrid do not register the usual crowds.

The shops, bars and restaurants that have been open since March are at half gas and cultural programming, especially live music,

has

also

suffered from anti-covid measures.

But, even so, despite the onslaught of the global pandemic and political squabbles, there are still openings for hope and countless things to do.

Because Madrid is wounded, but not dead.

If the capital can boast of anything, it is a cultural fabric capable of resisting through thick and thin, the same that continues to program dozens of activities for all types of audiences.

A good example is the new program of the City Council, 21 Districts, which is launched this weekend and seeks to decentralize and energize the offer with

free proposals in the cultural centers

of the capital: music, theater, poetry, children's shows ...

This Saturday, the El Torito Cultural Center welcomes the Mucha Niña collective, which raises a meeting around dance and female creation, while Sheila Blanco proposes a musical tribute to the poets who made up the generation of 27 at the Moncloa Cultural Center.

The Amparo Niño and Josemi Carmona thing at the Antonio Machado Cultural Center looks more like a gastronomic-musical encounter than anything else.

Mother and son, former bailaora and guitarist, combine ingredients to season a stew with a marked Andalusian flavor.

THE CURTAIN OPENS

After the general closure in March, a good part of Madrid's theaters have gradually returned to activity,

recovering the premieres postponed and then canceled, or rescuing old hits.

This is the case of the Teatros del Canal, which these days once again have the interpretive gale of the six actor-musicians who give life to the characters of

Lehman Trilogy.

There is also no shortage of novelties, such as the one proposed by the Pavón Kamikaze Theater, which

Matar Cansa

premieres these days

,

the monologue of the Argentine playwright and filmmaker Santiago Loza starring Jaime Lorente:

a visceral, poetic and disturbing vision of the figure of a serial killer .

On the stage of Las Naves del Español, meanwhile, comes

Las criadas,

a new version of Jean Genet's classic with a trio of first-rate performers such as Ana Torrent, Alicia Borrachero and Jorge Calvo and directed by Luis Luque.

Lidia Guillem, Adrián Justel and Coral Ros in the alternative theater play 'Gérmen'

For those who want to enter the alternative circuit of the capital, this bridge can also be a golden opportunity thanks to the seventh edition of

the Surge Festival,

which invites you to visit spaces such as the Pradillo Theater, the Lagrada Theater, the Tarambana Room or La Mirador, fundamental in driving new talent and emerging companies.

Throughout the weekend, four pieces arrive on their respective stages, ranging from the dance of

In Silence

to a very free adaptation of Miss Julia by Strindberg, with a groundbreaking title such as

Use your skull as a glass,

passing through the three stories Parallels of

Germen

or the multidisciplinary and uncomplexed show of

Free and Confined.

A CINEMA PLAN

When reality becomes an agonizing accumulation of nonsense, fiction becomes the best possible refuge.

And movie theaters, hit by the cancellation of Hollywood blockbusters, offer a particularly cozy refuge in their dark and, more than ever, safe theaters.

Given the shortage of

blockbusters, it

is the opportunity for

more modest films of all imaginable genres, such

as the ones that

hit

the bill this weekend: the nostalgic warmth of

Verano del 85,

the hooligan comedy of

El rey del barrio,

the The speculative science fiction of Captive Nation or the minimalist horror of

The Vigil.

There is also space for four national vintage documentaries, with special mention for

Dehesa, the Iberian Lynx Forest,

one of the

largest nature film productions shot in our country.

For the most militant cinephilia, two infallible proposals:

the cycle dedicated to Tsai Ming Liang

in the Spanish Film Library and the reopening of the Small Cinema Studio, which offers

two jewels of Jean-Luc Godard's filmography:

A

separate band

and

A married woman.

Scene from the movie 'Nada', within the cycle dedicated to Tsai Ming Liang at Filmoteca Española

And if you want to discover new talents in our cinema, the

29th Madrid Film Festival

organized by the New Filmmakers Platform offers free or at a reduced price screenings of unreleased short and feature films at Cineteca, Sala Berlanga and Sala Equis.

LET'S GO TO MUSEUMS

Madrid's art scene is not the same as it was before the pandemic and some of the more ambitious exhibitions that were scheduled for this fall have been postponed, but the quantity and quality of the museum offer in Madrid is simply overwhelming.

A bridge can be a unique opportunity to get closer to

the Prado Museum

to discover

The Guests,

the first exhibition organized by the gallery after its reopening: "a reflection on the way in which the established powers defended and propagated the role of women in society through the visual arts ".

Without leaving the Paseo del Prado,

CaixaForum

invites us to delve into the last half century of American graphic art in

The American Dream.

From pop to today.

It is not the only place where we find works by Andy Warhol: the

Fernán Gómez Centro Cultural de la Villa

also exhibits a work of the genius who revolutionized art in the 60s in

This is Not a Love Song,

which analyzes the interrelationships between the visual arts and music from the middle of the last century to the present day.

For photography lovers,

some of the best PhotoEspaña exhibitions

show the incisive gaze of such influential figures as Danny Lyon (ICO Museum) or Lee Friedlander (Mapfre Foundation).

Representation of the intergalactic adventure of 'Blip y Lúa' at the Retiro Puppet Theater

A BRIDGE IN FAMILY

Children are the true heroes from the beginning of this nightmare from which we cannot wake up, and that is why they deserve all our attention when there is no work or school.

If they are very young, a good option is to share with them your passion for

puppets,

which like every weekend offer guaranteed laughter at the Retiro Puppet Theater, in this case

with

Blip and Lúa's

intergalactic adventure

.

It is not the only option:

The Seven Little Goats and the Wolf

at the Luchana Theater or

The Monster Who Ate Nightmares

at the La Usina Theater

are

also highly

recommended

.

The Quinta de los Molinos Open Space also invites children to discover its free play rooms and workshops, as well as being an opportunity to explore this little-known corner of the city.

Older people can take advantage of a walk along the

Cuesta de Moyano

to get some interesting reading, go into the

Botanical Garden

or discover three recently opened spaces that offer emotions for all tastes:

the Museum of Illusions,

with about twenty experiences visual, experimental and educational in which nothing is what it seems

;

the Ikono interactive art gallery,

ideal for teenagers hooked on Instagram;

o

Virtual Arena,

the largest venue dedicated to virtual reality in Madrid.
