Vildmarksvägen passes through two counties and three municipalities - Strömsund, Dorotea and Vilhelmina.

The most famous part goes through the mountain area in Stekenjokk where every June the road is plowed straight through several meters of snow depth.

- We estimate that 45,000 vehicles will have passed before we close the road in a week, says Ulrica Olsson, development manager at Vilhelmina municipality.

What do you think the sharp increase is due to?

- Yes, it is of course an incredibly beautiful nature and we have seen that interest has increased for several years.

But it is clear that the pandemic has meant that many Swedes have had a holiday and a holiday this year, says Ulrica Olsson.

The onslaught has not been without problems and one consequence is that the reindeer herding industry has been affected by serious disturbances.

The large number of people and vehicles have stressed reindeer passing on a moving trail that crosses Vildmarksvägen.

But according to Ulrica Olsson, Vilhelmina municipality has a dialogue with the Sami villages to solve the problems that arose during the summer.
