Since 1949, bars and other clubs can stay open in the German capital all night long, making Berlin by night famous.

The Covid-19 pandemic got the better of this tradition, if we omit the containment in the spring.

From this Saturday, bars, restaurants and "spätis", these small shops essential to stock up at any time of beer and other spirits must close from 11 p.m., when the night in Berlin has barely begun, and this. until 6 a.m.

Violators incur a fine of at least 5,000 euros, reports our correspondent on the spot,

Pascal Thibaut

After the spring containment, the enthusiasm of the tenants is measured.

Some have lodged a summary complaint before the administrative court, considering it illogical that these restrictions do not apply to places of shows, sports clubs, saunas or brothels.

A judgment is expected next week.

Critics believe that private parties where barrier gestures have no place will develop and with them infections.

The new measures, however, provide that these evenings must be limited to ten people.

Their control is obviously difficult.

Germany remains the country in Europe where the Covid-19 pandemic has been best controlled so far.

But in the face of the increase in the number of infections, major cities are introducing new restrictions.

This Saturday morning, Cologne, the capital of the most populous region, North Rhine-Westphalia, announced a measure similar to that of Berlin from 10 p.m.

Another large German city, Hamburg has opted for the compulsory wearing of a mask in public places from Monday.
