Al-Assad calls for "rain prayer" to extinguish the fires in Latakia

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad called for rain prayers throughout Syria, asking for rain and extinguishing fires.

The Ministry of Religious Endowments said, on its official Facebook page today, that Al-Assad called for the prayer of rain, asking for rain, lifting the calamity and putting out the fires.

In addition to the ministry, the Fiqh Scientific Council and the Union of Levant Scholars participated in the invitation.

More than 79 fires are still burning in the Latakia countryside, which is the largest number in the history of Syria.

According to the Minister of Agriculture, Hassan Qatna, the Latakia Fire Brigade is no longer able to count the number of fires.

The government newspaper, Tishreen, said that the village of Beit Aarkoush in the Mashta al-Hilu area was completely burnt, and the fire was expanding and threatening other villages.

The fires in Banias also caused great losses in greenhouses, and houses were burned in Tartus, amid fears that the fires would spread to other homes.

In the countryside of Jableh, the area of ​​burning land reached two thousand dunums, and the residents deserted their homes.

The municipality of Al-Haffah in Latakia countryside warned of the danger of the fires raging in the governorate approaching the Agricultural Bank, which contains 150 tons of ammonium nitrate, indicating a major disaster that will occur if the fire is not extinguished, according to what was reported by the local newspaper, Al-Watan.

Ammonium nitrate is dangerous if ignited, as the Beirut port witnessed an explosion on August 4, due to 2750 tons of the substance.
