Trump's statement comes after the US Commission of Presidential Debates announced that the next debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden will take place digitally.

The idea is that the two presidential candidates, due to the risk of infection, will be in different places in Miami, Florida.

The debate was scheduled to take place on October 15, which is about two weeks after the US president is believed to have been infected with the coronavirus.

Holds campaign meeting instead

But, now it is doubtful whether the debate will end.

"I will not take part in a digital debate," Trump told Fox News.

The president's campaign manager, Bill Stepien, says in a statement that it is possible to guarantee the safety of everyone involved and still hold a debate and that the decision on a digital debate was made solely to benefit Joe Biden.

- We avoid this sad excuse to save Joe Biden and have a political meeting instead, he says.

Biden's campaign: "Ready"

Biden's campaign states that "they are ready", but has still not given a clear answer if they are willing to participate in a digital debate.

- We do not know enough right now, says Biden according to the news agency AP.

Biden also says that it would be irresponsible to comment on Trump's proposal "because he changes his mind every second".

The Biden campaign also states that it will arrange an opportunity for voters to ask questions directly to Joe Biden if the president sticks to his decision.
