The seven people, indicted in connection with the violence, which occurred at the Faculty of Law of Montpellier (Hérault) on March 22, 2018, including the former dean and a professor, will be tried before the criminal court, said the prosecution, confirming the information of the newspaper Le D'Oc, and of Mediapart.

This referral was decided by the investigating judge in an order dated August 7.

Five of the indicted persons, including a professor, will be tried for “willful violence in a meeting”.

The others, the former dean and the wife of the professor prosecuted, are accused of “complicity in willful violence in meetings”.

Some of them have one thing in common: they are close to far-right movements.

Ten minor injuries

On March 22, 2018, a hooded commando armed with batons and an electric pulse gun entered the amphitheater of the law faculty to expel students and activists protesting against the reform of access to the university , causing 10 minor injuries.

The facts had been partially filmed.

In the order for reference, the examining magistrate specifies that the attackers used wooden pallets to “bang on the tables (…) but also to hit recalcitrant people”.

In September 2018, during the investigations, the then prosecutor, Christophe Barret, had indicated that the commando had gathered outside the university, then in a parking lot inside, then entered the amphitheater in a secondary entrance.

The law professor indicted was designated by students as the one "who paved the way for the commando to lead it to the occupied amphitheater".

He also allegedly "hit some demonstrators".

But it is "indisputable" that the latter also "received blows", specifies the examining magistrate.

Concerning the former dean of the faculty, "the question which arises comes down to determining whether he knew that these people (…) were not police officers" and "whether he authorized such an intervention".

It is finally established that the latter, who resigned after the facts, did not strike.
