The XXL Christmas tree, made up of 400 small trees, was installed for the first time in Toulouse last year on the ramblas.

Toulouse Town Hall

  • This Thursday, the municipal majority of Toulouse proposes a wish to support the Christmas tree and more generally its traditions.

  • A position echoing that of the ecological mayor of Bordeaux who decided to remove the traditional Christmas tree from Place Pey-Berland.

  • A political wish intended to push the Toulouse environmentalists to position themselves on this question… Which they do not intend to do, evoking “a non-subject”.

Last year, the arrival on the new ramblas of an XXL tree had not failed to create controversy in Toulouse, long before it became a subject on the Bordeaux side.

A few days before the festivities, a giant tree had emerged from the ground, near the new ramblas.

A conifer, 20 meters high, actually made up of 385 small trees of 1.80 m placed on a unique metal structure.

At the time, while the municipal campaign was in full swing, criticism from environmentalists and opponents had been described as sterile by the Capitol.

But this Thursday, it is the municipal majority who decided to put the subject back in front of the fireplace by presenting to the vote a wish "supporting the installation of natural Christmas trees in Toulouse" during the city council.

Political positioning

In this proposed text, the group of Jean-Luc Moudenc, the mayor LR, proposes to take a stand against "the questioning of popular or sporting traditions by caricature environmental considerations is detrimental to the defense of our environment".

Already, during his political comeback, he had won a spade to Pierre Hurmic and his environmental friends.

When the mayor of Bordeaux decided to remove the Christmas tree from the Place Pey-Berland, for the mayor LR of the Pink City, this showed the “Toulouse residents the image of what they escaped”,

My beautiful Christmas tree, king of the alleys!

This 🎄 hybrid is made of 400 real trees.

Why ?

To avoid removing an 80-year-old tree in the Vosges to transport it to #Toulouse.

A responsible culture that preserves our natural reserves ... and the magic of #Christmas!

“Echoing the declaration of the mayor of Bordeaux, we are asking Archipel to take a position.

We want to find a balance between popular and festive traditions and a positive and pragmatic ecology, if we want to tackle the tree, it is because we want to change our society.

Christmas is a national holiday which goes beyond the framework of the Catholic community, ”argues Pierre Esplugas-Labatut on behalf of the municipal majority.

The latter recalls in passing that these firs have the advantage of absorbing carbon dioxide and support the forestry sector "which employs 440,000 people in France".

It is sure, in Toulouse we will have our 500 trees, brought by big trucks which will pollute the lungs of our children.

Phew!

Then it's better to put x thousands of € in a company that matters rather than local people for a live show!

So many arguments that still do not hit the mark on the side of elected environmentalists.

But this year, no fly of green wood on the tree.

"It's a non-subject, we will not participate in the vote, we have understood the manipulation, we will not fall into the trap.

On the other hand, the mayor had indicated that he was going to take up the question of ecology, to take up some of our proposals.

However, during this municipal council there was no deliberation on this subject apart from this wish on the tree.

Ecology cannot be reduced to political politics, ”replied Antoine Maurice, President EELV of the opposition group Archipel Citoyen.
