- If I go into a bank with a false identity document that is well executed, it is very difficult for the staff to see that it is a false ID document.

Had the document not been so easy to falsify, we would not have seen these crimes, says Jan Olsson, at the Police's national fraud center to SVT.

On their website, the police suggest several methods that individuals can use to protect themselves against fraudsters even hijacking their identity:

  • Do not open emails or links that are unknown to you.

There is a risk that you get a virus in your computer that, for example, copies your login information.

  • Do not use a too simple or the same password for different services.

  • Have up-to-date virus protection on your computer and mobile.

  • Do not download new apps without checking if they have been around for a long time and received positive reviews and ratings.

  • Check the number of reviews and ratings before downloading apps.

  • Do not send personal or account information via e-mail without first checking that the company, authority or organization in question has requested the information.

  • Use services that give you information directly on your mobile or via e-mail if someone has taken a credit report on you.

Then you have the chance to act quickly by contacting the current credit company and stopping the credit / loan from being granted.

  • Make sure that no unauthorized persons can access your mail.

  • Do not expose your personal information unnecessarily.

Do not give out your social security number online and do not throw mail with personal information in the garbage or paper collection

  • If you have lost an identity document, report it to the Police and to credit information companies.

Here's what you can do if you suspect you are affected:

  • If you receive information that someone unauthorized has taken credit information in your name or if you have been the victim of a fraud, you have the opportunity to block your social security number with the credit information companies free of charge.

  • Report fraud to the police as soon as possible and dispute the invoices.

  • Call your bank and check your accounts.

  • If you have lost an ID card or driving license, you must block it.

Contact the card issuer (company / authority that issued the card).

The phone number for the lock is on the back of the card, it may be a good idea to note this in advance.
