Just over 2,600 people from 105 associations participated in this year's river cleaning along five rivers in Sweden - including the Klarälven river.

Together, they picked up 30 tonnes of rubbish, which is seven tonnes more than last year.

According to the organizers, a clear reason for more rubbish is that an increased "homestring" - that is, that more people stay at home in corona times.

- We see that this year's sharp increase in homesteading has unfortunately also meant increased litter around our rivers.

Many barbecues as well as plastic and disposable items have been picked up at overnight campsites, says Maja Nordgren, who is project manager at Fortum, in a press release.

It is Fortum in collaboration with Städa Sverige that arranges the annual cleaning along the country's rivers.

- It is fantastic to see such a great commitment from the sports associations and young people to want to participate in Älvstädningen.

That the awareness of littering and the importance that we take care of our nature is spreading is very fun to take part in, says Katarina Ridderberg, project manager at Städa Sverige, in the press release.
