A fighter plane recently crashed in southern Tunisia, in the Saharan area of Remada.

It was an F5 of the Tunisian army, said Tuesday the Ministry of Defense.

The aircraft was on an "operational mission in the depths of the Sahara in Remada," said the ministry's statement.

The pilot of the plane was killed instantly in the crash, authorities said.

Surveillance of the Saharan regions

A military judicial investigation has been opened to determine the reasons for this accident.

The ministry did not give more details, nor delivered the first findings of investigators.

Algerian military forces are carrying out search operations in mountainous regions to track down jihadists.

Similar missions are being carried out in the Saharan areas, near the Algerian and Libyan borders, to thwart the activities of smugglers.
