The trial of Genaro Garcia Luna, former Mexican minister of public security in charge of the fight against trafficking, will begin Wednesday before the Brooklyn court in New York in the United States.

The former politician is believed to have played a role in the development of the Sinaloa cartel, reputed to be the worst in Latin America.

An exceptional trial opens Wednesday in a court in Brooklyn in New York in the United States: that of the former Mexican public security minister Genaro Garcia Luna.

Formerly responsible for coordinating the fight against drug trafficking, Genaro Garcia Luna is targeted by charges of corruption and involvement in drug trafficking.

Through this trial, it is the question of the degree of penetration of drug traffickers within the Mexican state apparatus that arises.

Accused of serving the most violent of Latin American cartels

The politician was therefore responsible for supervising the fight against all drug trafficking with considerable resources at his disposal.

In particular, he had control over the internal intelligence services through which he had passed.

Despite this curriculum vitae of "super cop", Genaro Garcia Luna is well and truly suspected of having put himself at the service of the most powerful and the most violent of the Latin American cartels.

This is the Sinaloa cartel, very present on the west coast of Mexico.

In the 2000s, under the direction of his famous godfather "El Chapo", he achieved the feat of bringing the Colombian cartels of Medellín and Cali to heel.

Suspected bribes of tens of millions of dollars

Genaro Garcia Luna is suspected of having played a role in this conquest, in addition to having guaranteed the smooth running of drug export operations to the United States or Europe.

In return, the indictment mentions bribes in the colossal amount of several tens of millions of dollars.

Following the election of a new president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, at the head of Mexico in 2018, Genaro Garcia Luna had fled his country to find refuge in Miami.

"AMLO", a leftist leader, had made the fight against corruption his hobbyhorse.

His accomplice "El Chapo" has since been arrested and extradited to the United States.

It was he who provided American justice with the details necessary to indict Genaro Garcia Luna.

The politician faces a minimum of 10 years in prison and a maximum of life.
