Half of this year's physics prize was awarded to British scientist Roger Penrose, and the other half to German scientist Reinhard Genzel and American scientist Andrea Ghez ), in recognition of their contributions to "black hole research and discovery of supermassive compact objects in the center of the Milky Way."

At noon on the 6th local time, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded half of the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics to British scientist Roger Penrose, and the other half to German scientist Reinhard Genzel and American scientist Andrea Ghez in recognition of their contributions in the field of astrophysics.

According to Nobel’s official website, Roger Penrose was born in Colchester, England in 1931. He was awarded the prize for discovering that the formation of black holes is a reliable prediction of general relativity.

Reinhard Genzel was born in Bad Homburg, Germany in 1952, and Andrea Goz was born in New York City in 1965.

These two scientists won the award for discovering the supermassive and compact object in the center of the Milky Way.

The official website of the Nobel Prize stated that the groundbreaking discoveries of the three of them have opened up new horizons for the study of super-mass dense celestial bodies and will stimulate future scientific research.

According to reports, the three scientists will share a bonus of 10 million Swedish kronor (about 7.6 million yuan).

It is worth mentioning that since the first award in 1901, the Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded 114 times, and a total of 215 scientists have won the award.

Prior to this, only three women had won the Nobel Prize in Physics. In addition to Marie Curie, the other two were Maria Goppert-Meyer, who won the prize for nuclear research in 1963, and the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2018. Donna Strickland, awarded for her breakthrough contribution in the field of physics.

As a result, the American scientist Andrea Gerz became the fourth female Nobel Prize winner in physics.

According to the schedule, this year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry, Literature, Peace and Economics will be announced from October 7th to 12th.

Affected by the new crown epidemic, the Nobel Prize award ceremony will no longer be held in December this year, and the award ceremony will be held online.
