  • Health: National Security warned on March 7 of the overflow of the Covid-19 epidemic

The Popular Party and Citizens have declared themselves scandalized and demand explanations from the Government after learning that the Executive was alerted, in February and March, on several occasions by the Department of National Security of the danger posed by the coronavirus epidemic and the risk that existed of a sudden increase in deaths, especially in the Community of Madrid.

Reports, which as revealed by EL MUNDO, were ignored by Pedro Sánchez.

This has been stated by both parties this Tuesday in parliament, although they have not obtained, for the moment, any explanation from the Executive.

The PP, in fact, has registered in Congress an initiative urging the Government to make public all the reports issued by National Security from November 17, 2019 until today.

This demand is added to the request for the appearance of the Vice President of the Government Carmen Calvo and of the Minister of Health, Salvador Illa, in the Lower House to explain the inaction of the Executive in the face of these alerts.

To the perplexity of the PP is added that of Ciudadanos, which also considers extremely serious, as pointed out by its spokesman Edmundo Bal, the alleged passivity of the Government in the face of such clear warnings as those of National Security.

The

insist that the Government must accept as soon as possible the creation of a commission of independent scientific experts to evaluate the management of the pandemic, detect mistakes and provide the necessary recommendations to stop the second wave and avoid, where appropriate, a third .

The minister's arguments

The Minister of Health prefers for the moment to urge the PP to use its "vehemence" against the Government to combat the coronavirus.

He claims to be "radical in the defense of public health and the institutional framework" and defends, as he has done in the Senate, the need to act "long before" having an incidence of 500 cases per 100,000 inhabitants to bend the curve of the pandemic.

The head of Health, whom the opposition sees already acting as the future candidate of the PSC in the Catalan elections, has defended himself against the reproaches of the PP and Cs, ensuring that Spain was one of the first countries to adopt measures against the pandemic from the March 11th.

The Minister of Health, Salvador Illa, this Tuesday, in the control session of the Government, in the Senate.

Illa appeals to the "common sense" of the PP to recognize that from his Ministry an effort of "transparency" has been made.

But the

popular

do not give up in their desire for the Government to explain why it did not heed the warnings issued by the Department of National Security in February and March -before 8-M- and allowed the holding of mass events such as the demonstration Women's Day or the Vox Congress.

The PP insists that you cannot "inoculate the lie" in the Spanish people and that you cannot make a fictitious story to the citizens.

Faced with this, Salvador Illa insists that it must be recognized that Covid-19 "has brought the West to its knees" and defends that "the enemy is not the Government, but the virus."

In this sense, he calls on the opposition for "patriotism" to help spread abroad the effort that Spain has made to contain the pandemic.

Cs: "They did everything late and badly"

Ciudadanos has also delved into this issue in the Upper House.

His senator

Lorena Roldán

has urged the Government to "give explanations" for the situation in which Spain finds itself, "the worst in Europe."

"The figures are neither to make the wave, nor to get chest, nor to be satisfied. You did everything late and badly," he reproached.

Roldán defends his party's initiative to create a committee of scientific experts to analyze the public policies that are being carried out and accuses the Government of turning a deaf ear to this demand.

"You reject an investigation commission in Congress to find out what was done wrong. But we owe it to the citizens, especially when you and Dr. [Fernando] Simón allow themselves to question the data of the Community of Madrid while they hold a dance of 24,000 deceased people ".

The senator also emphasizes the alerts that the Government received from National Security since January 16 and ignored them.

And regrets: "This is not acceptable."

Roldán reviewed in the Senate all the government's stumbling blocks in managing the pandemic and as a conclusion assures that only a government "refractory to criticism" is capable of not recognizing them.

Illa's excuses

Illa, for her part, has promised to make a constructive evaluation of what has happened in the country to "know what things the national health system has done well and what badly."

And she has announced the opening of a debate within the Interterritorial Health Council to determine who, what and how should do it.

He has also rejected having questioned the data on the pandemic provided by any autonomous community, but has insisted that, in addition to the accumulated incidence of the disease, other factors must be evaluated.

"We must not rush to eliminate measures that are bearing fruit," he assured, referring to the Community of Madrid.

In addition, he has advanced that next week the awards of the 2,000 million purchases of sanitary material planned by the Government will begin to be made.
