Prosecutions were initiated on Saturday for "apologizing for terrorism by means of videos" against a Pakistani imam from Villiers-le-Bel, in Val-d'Oise, the Pontoise prosecutor's office said.

The Pontoise public prosecutor's office on Saturday initiated proceedings for "apologizing for terrorism by means of videos" against a Pakistani imam from Villiers-le-Bel after two days in police custody, he told the AFP.

"Use of a telecommunications network"

This imam, born in 1987 and officiating in a mosque in the Carreaux district since 2016, was arrested Thursday and placed in custody, said a police source, confirming information from M6.

He had been arrested as part of an open investigation for "apologia for terrorism with the use of a telecommunications network", said the Pontoise prosecution, without giving more details on the charges against the imam.

At the end of his police custody, this imam was referred on Saturday to the Pontoise public prosecutor's office for "a hearing procedure on prior recognition of guilt (CRPC)", a plea-guilty mechanism offering an alternative to a trial.
