In the Östergötland Region, staff at both hospitals and nursing homes have been tested on a broad front to see what proportion of staff have antibodies and who have thus had covid-19.

Low proportion infected in hospitals

What is surprising about the result is that staff who worked close to covid-19 patients at the hospital have not become more infected than the rest of the population.

- We may have thought that they would be a little higher, because they have worked with infected patients day in and day out, but it turned out that they did not have antibodies at all to such an extent.

But they are on a par with the rest of the population, says infection control doctor Britt Åkerlind in the Östergötland Region.

Half of the staff became infected in nursing homes

On the other hand, the proportion infected in the tested nursing homes was significantly higher.

At one of the residences, almost half of the staff had covid-19.

- Where we know that there has been a spread of infection, there we also have more antibody prevalence, both among users and employees, says Britt Åkerlind.
