"Any attempt to interfere in the internal affairs of a sovereign state and to press legitimate authorities from abroad is unacceptable," the Kremlin said in a statement.

The call comes after Macron on Tuesday met with Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tichanovskaya in Lithuania.

According to her, Macron has, among other things, promised to help in negotiations with the Belarusian authorities.

"He promised to do everything possible to help with negotiations during this political crisis in our country," Tichanovskaya told reporters after the meeting with Macron on Tuesday.

Last week, the EU stated that Belarus's authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko is not the country's legitimate leader and Macron has said it is high time he resigned.
