Arsenal qualified for the quarter-finals of the League Cup on Thursday by winning on penalties in Liverpool (0-0, 5 tab to 4), while D2 clubs Brentford and Stoke created surprises.

It was already the third clash between the two teams this season and the second of the week, the Reds having taken the best of the Gunners on Monday in the league (3-1) after an admirable performance.

In raising the curtain of the season, Arsenal had taken the best after penalties (1-1, 5-4 on penalties) during the Community Shield.

The League Cup match was much less impressive, with Jürgen Klopp only putting Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah as usual starters on the pitch at kick-off - and again, they came out on time. .

This did not prevent Liverpool from dominating the proceedings quite clearly and the defending champion may regret not having opened the scoring just before the break when, on a header from Diogo Jota pushed back by Bernd Leno, Takumi Minamino rushed forward. to resume, but saw his attempt rebound just in front of the goal line before moving away again (45 + 1).

In the second half, Leno distinguished himself on several occasions (52nd, 63rd, 64th), while Adrian especially shone on a header from Rob Holding on a corner (70th).

A new shooting session was therefore necessary and it was again the German goalkeeper of the Gunners who shone the most by stopping Harry Wilson's 6th attempt to allow Joe Willock, despite an Adrian who braked the ball, to qualify his team.

In the other two quarter-finals of the evening, the Championship clubs (D2) thwarted logic.

Brentford took his revenge for the barrage of accession to the Premier League, this time beating Fulham bluntly (3-0).

A semi-surprise as the start of the season of the promoted, who has already conceded 13 goals in 6 matches, is worrying.

Stoke's victory at Aston Villa (1-0) is, on the other hand, a good performance, even if the Birmingham club, unfortunate finalist against Manchester City last year (2-1), had fielded a B team.
