01 October 2020The European Commission has launched an infringement procedure against the United Kingdom for the law on the internal market, which violates the withdrawal agreement from the EU in several parts.

The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, reports this in a press statement in Brussels.

"We had invited the United Kingdom - says von der Leyen - to remove the problematic parts of the law on the internal market by the end of September. This law is by its nature a violation of the obligation of good faith contained in the withdrawal agreement. plus, if adopted as it is, it would be in complete contradiction with the protocol on Ireland and Northern Ireland. The deadline passed yesterday and the problematic parts of the law have not been removed. "

"Therefore - he continues - the Commission decided this morning to send a letter of formal notice to the British government: it is the first step in the infringement procedure. The letter invites the British government to send its observations within a month. In addition to this, the Commission will continue to work hard for the full and timely implementation of the withdrawal agreement. We honor our commitments, "he concludes.

Johnson's spokesman, we will respond in due course

The British government claims its "reasons" behind the national draft law (Internal Market Bill) which calls into question part of the divorce agreements signed with the EU in response to the letter with which the Commission European Commission confirmed its intention to take legal action against London if the matter is not clarified within a month.

"We will respond to the letter in due course", a spokesman for Boris Johnson cut short, but "we have clearly indicated our reasons for introducing (through the disputed law, already approved by the House of Commons, the measures relating to the protocol on Northern Ireland ". It is a question, he insisted, of" creating a legal safety net to protect the UK internal market "and at the same time" protecting the Irish peace process ".
