American magazine: Thousands of people survived "influenza" due to "Corona"

Although the deaths due to the emerging corona virus pandemic exceeded one million deaths around the world out of 34 million infections, there is surprising good news about a common disease, which is influenza.

The magazine "Syntax American" reported that the flu season is virtually non-existent in the southern hemisphere this year, although it starts naturally since March.

This means that thousands of lives have survived the influenza virus, which annually kills between one hundred and five hundred thousand people.

Despite the need for further study to find out the reason for this, public health experts say that the most clear explanation for this is that the measures used to prevent the spread of the Corona virus had a beneficial effect on containing the flu.

It includes social distancing, wearing a mask, and washing hands.

"This is believed to be caused by wearing a muzzle, frequent hand washing, social distancing, and reduced gatherings," Dr. George Benjamin, executive director of the American Public Health Association, told Salon News.

He added, "Influenza and common cold diseases are diseases that spread from one person to another in the same way that Corona disease spreads. Accordingly, efforts made to reduce the spread of Corona disease had a double benefit as it reduced influenza and cold disease."

Dr. Russell Medford, head of the Center for Public Health Innovation and Center for International Crisis Coordination, made similar observations when explaining why influenza is declining in the United States and the rest of the world.

Medford said: "Biologically, influenza and common cold diseases are respiratory diseases that share the same way of spreading with the Corona virus. Accordingly, the use of a face mask, for example, is expected to not protect people from corona only, but from cold and influenza diseases."
