According to Barrasso, a senator from Wyoming, which has the largest explored reserves of uranium ore in the United States, Russia's cheap nuclear fuel is "undermining" the production of this resource in the United States.

Also, according to the senator, Russia uses uranium as a "geopolitical weapon", which poses a threat to both energy and US national security.

“The Trump administration is taking serious action to thwart them.

Our bill, prepared by representatives of the two parties, will make it possible to legalize such measures, as well as to revive and strengthen the production of uranium in America, ”the press service said.

In this regard, the senators propose to systematically reduce the volume of quotas for the supply of low-enriched uranium from Russia from 595.7 tons in 2021 to 267.7 tons by 2040.

Thus, the senators expect "to reduce dependence on uranium imports to protect vital national security interests, to revive and optimize the supply chain of nuclear fuel produced and used in the United States, and to expand the production of nuclear fuel in the United States."

Parliamentarians note that the proposed bill will eliminate loopholes that damage American uranium producers, and will also require the US Secretary of Energy to provide a report on the measures taken to accurately determine the volume of imports.

Earlier, the United States proposed to create an "international nuclear fuel bank" for Iran and other countries, which will be replenished by manufacturers outside the Middle East.
