On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the reunification of the two parts of Germany, German Chancellor Angela Merkel thanked the civil rights activists and participants in the protests in the East German Democratic Republic, previously, for the peaceful demonstrations.

Yesterday, in a public debate in the German parliament (Bundestag), on the occasion of the anniversary of the unification of the two parts of the country on the third of next October, Merkel said that these activists made the reunification possible thanks to their efforts and courage, and added: “This anniversary is an occasion that calls for great happiness and gratitude. Especially with regard to the historically unprecedented achievement of an entire people during these 30 years in achieving reunification from within and without. ”

Merkel stated that, during the past 30 years, the differences in living conditions between East and West have been greatly reduced, noting at the same time that there are still structural differences that more efforts must be made to settle them. She said: “Unity is a continuous process not only between East and West, But also between the city and the countryside and the weak and strong regions, structurally, throughout Germany. ”

Regarding the Corona pandemic, Merkel said that this "wonderful memory" will not be celebrated as it was imagined a year ago, and she said: "It will be calmer than it should have been in reality."

It should be noted that on a historic night in November 1989, thousands of East German youth decided to change the course of history, and rushed to break through the wall between the two Germans.

This wall, which was a symbol of the rupture of the German family, collapsed after 28 years, setting the clock on German unity.

During the night of November 9-10, 1989, hundreds of East German citizens changed the course of history when they rushed to breach the Berlin Wall and bring down the ideological and concrete wall that had separated the two Germans for 28 years.

Defeated Germany in the Second World War had inherited the differences of the Allies and the Soviet Union over influence in Europe, and it was divided into two sectors: the first was in the west, called the Federal Republic of Germany, and the second was in the east of the German Democratic Republic, and accordingly Berlin turned into the focus of conflict in the Cold War.

In August 1961, the East German authorities built a 155-kilometer-long wall separating East and West Berlin, over three meters high.

Security checkpoints were also set up, the most famous of which is the "Charlie Checkpoint".

The Berlin Wall remained a symbol of the rupture of the German body, and a symbol for the separation of German families.

In October 1989, tens of thousands of people demonstrated in East Germany against its regime in popular movements that marked the birth of a new era. On November 9, 1989, East Germany announced the fall of the wall and the opening of the borders.

During the past 30 years, living disparities between East and West have been significantly reduced.
