The two clubs of Manchester, Everton and Newcastle validated their tickets for the quarter-finals of the English League Cup on Wednesday during an evening without surprises.

The blow came very close for the Magpies, led from the 5th minute by the Welsh club Newport (D4) and who had to wait until the 87th minute to equalize and finally win on penalties (5-4).

The other matches were much less close.

Manchester United, who had made a hold-up this weekend against Brighton (3-2) in the league, with a penalty at the end of extra time, this time took the upper hand much more easily over the Seagulls.

Brighton had turned widely - just like the Red Devils, but not with the same squad - and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men won 3-0 with a goal from a slightly deflected free kick from Paul Pogba to close the scoring ( 80th).

Same price for City at Burnley, with a double from Raheem Sterling (35th, 49th) and a goal from their Spanish rookie Ferran Torres (65th).

Everton, who got off to a great start in the Premier League, with three wins in as many matches, disposed of West Ham (4-1) with a hat-trick from Dominic Calvert-Lewin (11th, 78th, 84th), already credited with 5 league achievements.

The Toffees, however, saw their Brazilian striker Richarlison, who had given them the advantage (2-1) in the 56th minute, and their rookie midfielder Allan come out on injury during the match, hoping that the damage will not be too important.

West Ham, where Sébastien Haller held the lead, regained hope at the very beginning of the second act with the equalizer of Robert Snodgrass (1-1, 46th).

On Thursday, Brentford and Stoke City, Championship residents (D2) and last representatives of the lower divisions, will try their luck by hosting Fulham and moving to Aston Villa.

A little later, Liverpool will receive Arsenal in a remake of Monday's game (3-1), but with starting eleven probably very different.

The quarter-final draw will take place immediately after.
