When Donald Trump emerged victorious on November 8, 2016, he was an untested political card.

Never before had a person with so little political experience been elected President of the United States.

Over the past four years, Donald Trump has shown what policy he stands for and it is the one he is running for election again.

His challenger Joe Biden is the man who on the third attempt managed to become the Democrats' presidential candidate.

Most opinion polls right now show a lead for Biden, both in terms of national figures and in the important wave master states.

But there is one month left until the election and we know that a lot can happen.

The choice also affects us

We at SVT want to make the American election understandable to a Swedish audience - because the election also affects us.

These include the climate issue, security policy and trade.

On site in the USA, we have our seconded Stefan Åsberg, Carina Bergfeldt and Fouad Youcefi.

They will travel and meet American voters, report and analyze in broadcasts and on svt.se.

Anyone who is interested in the opinion situation can follow the measurements day by day in our opinion map on svt.se.

In the Morning Studio, experts answer the audience's questions, and we broadcast all three presidential debates and the vice presidential debate.

Tuesday, November 3, is the big election day.

Then the election begins - no one knows when it will end.

In a regular election, we would see state after state called out to one or the other candidate to have a result in the early morning.

But it is not a common choice this year.

The corona pandemic has caused more people to vote by mail, which is likely to delay the counting of votes.

The election result may be delayed, and both sides are preparing for a legal battle.

Unpredictable outcome

We at SVT are preparing for an election with an unpredictable outcome.

SVT's vigil begins at 21.45 and lasts during the night and morning.

Then our broadcast continues all day on November 4, and in the evening 20.00 we broadcast an extra program.

On January 21, 2021, the next president will be sworn in.

According to the constitution, if the 45th president of the United States, Donald Trump, remains or if the United States gets its 46th president in Joe Biden, then it must be clear.

No one knows what will happen until then, but we at SVT are ready to report and explain.
