Mostly dressed in black and with their faces hidden, the demonstrators gathered on Monday, September 28, on the occasion of the international day of the right to abortion, in the historic center of Mexico City.

Some clashes erupted in the face of an impressive police device which then framed their course in the streets of the city.

"We want abortion, legal, safe and free for all women," shouted the demonstrators, calling for decriminalization across the country.

Abortion has only been legal in Mexico City, since 2007, and in the state of Oaxaca (south), from 2019, until the 12th week of pregnancy.

Except in Cuba and Uruguay where it is authorized, abortion is considered a crime in Latin America.

In a context of an upsurge in violence against women in Mexico - more than a thousand femicides recorded in 2019 - most of whom have gone unpunished, feminist groups have stepped up their protest actions to defend the cause of women.
