Disney has decided to give a sequel to its version of the "Lion King" in 3D, which will be entrusted to the director of "Moonlight", Barry Jenkins, AFP learned Tuesday from the world's number one entertainment.

Success in theaters despite rather lukewarm reviews, the live-action version of the famous cartoon, released in 2019, had collected more than $ 1.6 billion worldwide, thanks in particular to singer Beyoncé and many others. stars recruited for the dubbing of its characters.

The film, which chronicles the adventures of young lion cub Simba trying to avenge the death of his father, has become by far the highest grossing of recent Disney remakes, with an estimated budget of $ 250 million.

The sequel which will be devoted to it should use the same technological recipe combining old-fashioned cinema and virtual images.

No date or plot details have yet been released by Disney.

Barry Jenkins, whose "Moonlight" won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2017, said he "grew up with these" Lion King "characters when he helped his sister raise two young boys in the 1990s.

"To have the opportunity to work with Disney to develop this magnificent story of friendship, love and perpetuation while continuing my work of representing the lives and soul of the African diaspora, it is the dream", the African-American director said in a statement to AFP.
