Carles Puigdemont launched an offensive on Monday to discredit the Supreme Court before European authorities.

The fugitive from Justice wrote to the President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, and to all the MEPs to tell them that Quim Torra had been disqualified for committing "a crime of disobedience after placing a banner demanding 'Freedom for Political Prisoners and Exiles' ".

To curb secessionist propaganda in Europe, the seven Citizens MEPs have written to the 705 members of the European Parliament this Tuesday to explain in detail the ruling of the High Court that has disqualified Torra.

The delegation led by Luis Garicano concludes in his letter that the former president of the Generalitat has been convicted of "undermining and violating the rule of law" and the freedoms that he claims to defend.

The Spanish MEPs add in their letter, written in English, that Torra "is free to display any symbol that represents his political ideology, even in public buildings, but not during an electoral campaign."

As Cs emphasizes, "under the rule of law, public offices must be governed by the rules, especially those that guarantee equal opportunities in an electoral process."

The day before, Puigdemont denounced that the Supreme Court had perpetrated "a new violation of the political rights of Catalan citizens."

The fugitive added that "pro-independence politicians cannot have a fair trial in Spain" given the "judicial persecution for their political activity."

The independence leader is trying to get as many MEPs as possible to join his letter, which denounces the "judicial repression against the Catalan self-determination movement" and calls on the European institutions to defend "democracy and the rights of the Catalan people."

The letter written by Cs tries to make an "objective account of the events" that have led to the conviction of Torra, to give the MEPs of the 27 members of the EU the maximum information without distorting reality, as explained by the group liberal in Europe.

In it, they detail that the Supreme Court "has not condemned Torra for expressing his ideas," but for "disobeying a binding decision of the electoral authorities and for violating the rule of law."

In addition, it highlights that "under the rule of law, public offices must be governed by the rules, especially those that guarantee equal opportunities in an electoral process."

"Ultimately, no one questions the facts: Mr. Torra exhibited political propaganda in public buildings during an electoral campaign, he was warned for his actions, he refused to comply with the

decisions of the electoral bodies, he admitted to having breached them and was, consequently, condemned ", conclude the liberal MEPs.

In addition, they denounce that Torra's attitude "is not an isolated case of disobedience" and is embedded in "a deliberate strategy to undermine the rule of law."

Finally, Cs reminds MEPs that the three main European political groups (

popular

, socialists and liberals) condemned the appointment of Quim Torra as president of the Generalitat for his "racist comments" and "the rhetoric of hatred" frequently used by the now disabled leader.
