Between 700 and 800 people were evacuated this Tuesday morning by the police from a large migrant camp located around the Calais hospital.

Tents and Civil Protection vehicles have been set up at the entrance to this area.

"I decided to carry out this operation before the great cold of winter and temperatures of -3 to -4 degrees", declared on the spot the prefect of Pas-de-Calais, Louis Le Franc, specifying that 150 migrants will be “sheltered” in Pas-de-Calais, 150 in the other Hauts-de-France departments and the other 500 sent to reception centers in different regions.

“We want to avoid any new concentration and point of attachment to Calais and this Virval area will be made inaccessible.

We are studying with the mayor of Calais what it will be possible to do, ”added Louis Le Franc.

“Our goal is also to actively fight against smugglers and the systems they put in place,” he continued.

Since 6 o'clock this morning, the @PoliceNationale has been participating in an important operation to shelter #migrants in #Calais.

The latter are all taken care of and referred to accommodation centers.

Deplorable living conditions

In the undergrowth where the migrants were installed, many tents, duvets, blankets, shoes and clothes were abandoned.

Cans, garbage, overturned shopping carts and tarpaulins litter the ground, as well as survival blankets.

State services estimate the number of migrants living in Calais at a thousand, hoping to reach England.

The associations regularly denounce these dismantling operations, after which many migrants return.
