The officer who shot Jacob Blake up to seven times in the back - in an incident in Kenosha that sparked nationwide protests against police brutality - said he believed Jacob Blake was trying to kidnap one of his sons and pressed the trigger because Blake whirled on him brandishing a knife.

This was revealed by the attorney for agent Rusten Sheskey.

According to the lawyer, who spoke exclusively to CNN, when Sheskey went to the scene in response to a call from a woman who said that Blake should not be at home,

Sheskey heard the woman say: "She has my son He has my keys. "

The agent thought that if he did not act later they would have reproached him for not having acted to stop a kidnapping.

Brendan Matthews, Sheskey's attorney, said the agent was unaware that two other Blake children were in the van waiting for their father.

Sheskey said he did not stop shooting at Blake because he

believed he still posed "a threat."

The video that went viral last August, taken by a neighbor, which captures the attack, shows how Agent Sheskey and another colleague point at Blake as he goes to his vehicle to lean in and leave the child;

then Sheskey pulls the trigger.

Matthews' revelations on CNN take place at the same time that Wisconsin authorities have announced that the investigation by the Wisconsin Department of Justice will be referred to a retired local police chief who will review the results of the investigations independently.

He, in turn, will work with the local prosecution to determine whether or not police officer Rusten Sheskey has to face

criminal charges.

Matthews told CNN that he felt compelled to speak about a case not yet closed to provide an explanation that would contrast with the "inaccurate" account of what happened.

On the other hand, according to Blake's lawyer, Ben Crump, he came to the scene to

mediate a domestic fight

, did not pick up a knife or pose a threat to the police at any time.

"It's ridiculous," Justin Blake (Jacob's uncle) said of the allegation that Jacob had tried to kidnap his son.

What was revealed by Matthews clashes with the version of Blake's family and lawyers.

The officer's attorney further added that

a second police officer

on the scene provided a similar account, according to which Blake approached the officers with a knife.

This second policeman said he did not shoot him because he did not have a good angle to do so.

Both police officers are on leave pending the completion of the investigation.

The trial is scheduled for November 9.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice revealed that

a vehicle was found at the scene

but has not clarified whether Blake had held it up, threatening officers or whether it was discovered after police shot Blake, an African American, who was left behind by the incident.

paralyzed from the waist down.

The mother of the three children, who called the police, reported Blake for sexually assaulting a woman in May.

Blake, whom the police were looking for in relation to that complaint when it all happened last August, has pleaded not guilty to these accusations in a video recorded from the hospital a few days ago, where he is still admitted.
