Representatives from the Estonia Victims and Relatives Foundation, SEA, held a press conference on Monday afternoon.

Their common desire was clear: Investigate the sinking again.

The foundation has on several previous occasions criticized the official investigation into why Estonia sank.

Information about holes raises new questions

Estonia, Finland and Sweden appointed a joint accident commission in 1995, and the final report came in December 1997. According to it, the lock and the brackets on the ship's bow visor were undersized.

When the bow visor was torn off in the storm, large amounts of water rushed into the car deck, which caused the ship to capsize.

The representatives of the foundation believe that the new information about an approximately four meter long hole in the hull of the ship both confirms their fears that important things have been overlooked in the investigation as well as raise new questions.

They stated this during today's conference and also in a debate article.

Ångström: Collision with a military ship

Lars Ångström, a former member of parliament in the defense committee for the Green Party who has been involved in the issue for several years, believes that the hole is probably caused by another ship.

His view is that it is a military ship.

"Additional question marks"

Kent Härstedt, a survivor and former Member of Parliament for the Social Democrats, did not want to express an opinion on what may have caused the damage to the ship's hull.

On the other hand, he supports the demand for a new investigation as he does not feel that the current one is "complete and credible".

- I am not conspiratorial, but with what has emerged today, there will be further question marks - why is the hole not included in the official investigation, said Kent Härstedt.
