On Monday, the news came that Preem was withdrawing its application for expansion of the refinery in Lysekil.

When SVT Nyheter Väst reaches Inge Löfgren, chairman of the Nature Conservation Association in Lysekil, he has just found out about the news.

- It is absolutely fantastic, incredible, a real gift to the Swedish people!

This means that Sweden is on the track with climate work again, he says.

He believes that the decision is about Preem having difficulties getting it together financially, not least as a result of the coronavirus.

- People drive less cars and the flight has in principle been deleted.

I would think that Preem was hit hard by it, says Inge Löfgren.

"Had my guesses"

He lives in Lysekil himself and has seen the refinery up close.

- I did not dare to hope, but had my suspicions that this would happen.

I have seen that hardly any smoke has come out of their chimneys.

This shows that even large companies like Preem have significant difficulties in getting it together financially, he says.

"The oil era is over"

Inge Löfgren sees the announcement as a historic moment for Sweden's climate work.

- The oil era is over!

I have struggled hard with this for the last 20-25 years and this feels like a great victory.

Now Sweden can finally switch and invest more in environmentally friendly alternatives, he says.
