Pandemic: India overtakes Brazil and becomes the second country in the world with the most cases of coronavirus
India surpassed six million cases of coronavirus on Monday, adding more than 82,170 new infections in the last 24 hours, the same day that the death toll exceeded the 95,000 barrier.
The Asian country has 6,074,703 cases of Covid-19 and has registered 1,039 new deaths, according to the latest data from the Indian Ministry of Health.
India has become the
second most affected country in the world by the pandemic
in absolute terms, behind the United States, which already has 7.2 million detected cases.
Indian authorities have highlighted the relatively low mortality in this country of 1.3 billion people.
The United States has more than double the number of deaths, about 205,000;
while Brazil, with about 4.7 million cases, has registered about 141,000 deaths.
Experts and seroprevalence studies warn, however, that
the real figures for India could be much higher than those officially reported.
While health authorities are expected to release a new seroprevalence study, Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said on Sunday that India has not yet achieved herd immunity against the virus.
"India is far from having acquired a level of herd immunity, so all of us should continue with the appropriate behaviors for the coronavirus," Vardhan said in a media appearance.
