WHEN.

WHAT.

Ursula von der Leyen's European Commission proposed "flexible and voluntary contributions" as a system for distributing refugees in the EU.

Is the concept of solidarity obsolete?

In times of pandemic and if anyone can for himself, is there any space left for the act of closing ranks and joining the causes or companies of others?

The debate always hovers over our heads, but it rests on the table on occasions such as Wednesday, when the European Commission came out publicly to recognize that the quota system to distribute refugees (from conflicts such as Syria and stranded on Greek islands like Moria or Samos) was not viable and that they transformed it into an à la carte solidarity.

Ergo, there each country wanting to accept or not a group of unfortunate people, and there each State that has the misfortune of occupying the South of Europe geographically and having to deal alone with the shelter and destiny of thousands of these homeless.

A German citizen would add that they are tired of being the first to step forward in welcoming refugees.

Not only because its Chancellery is occupied by the daughter of a pastor with a strong sense of morality, but because it is a Protestant country, with Calvinist brushstrokes, very legalistic, where it believes in compliance with the laws and rules.

And if you belong to a club (European Union) where the value and objective of strengthening solidarity is set, there the Germans rush to exercise it without thinking.

Now, Berlin has it easy, because the philosophy that it has instilled in its population is that "if Europe is strong, Germany will be stronger."

What did not prevent this country from shielding itself and retreating when Italy or Spain suffered the first bites of the coronavirus.

"Europe needs more from Spain," says German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas.

"And Spain needs more from Europe," they reply from Madrid.

'ESPAÑA FIRST' AT THE TEMPLE OF DIPLOMACY

WHEN.

On Tuesday.

WHERE.

New York.

WHAT.

The United Nations General Assembly began virtually with the speech of the leaders of the main powers such as Donald Trump.

International news has been so absurd since the last five years that it is hardly surprising that in the United Nations, the temple of diplomacy, the president of the great North American power accuses another country of spreading an "invisible plague" throughout the world, putting the hot war (already more than cold) between Beijing and Washington.

Trump was not, however, wrong in other snippets of his speech, which were clouded by his low waist or little geopolitical courtesy in the framework of the UN, where the norm is that the courteous should leave aside the brave.

The Chinese leader, Xi Jinping, did know how to adapt to that game, who chose to take on the role of good cop and adapt to the rules of the United Nations protocol, however cynical or not very credible they can often be.

Faced with those who accuse him of raising the

America First

banner without measure

, Donald Trump encouraged them to do the same for (and in) their respective countries.

And there we all think of a new patriotism of

Spain First

.

Time is running out, the November elections are approaching and Trump does not stop casting his nets in his fishing grounds.

His epic phrase of the week was when he was asked if he would respect a peaceful transition of powers in the event of Joe Biden winning: "We'll see."

A 'blitzkrieg' against the coronavirus

WHEN.

This week.

WHERE.

Europe.

WHAT.

The second wave of Covid-19 continues to expand, with a large difference between countries that surf the second attack well and others that do not.

"Why are there so many countries that are doing it wrong, that they continue to make mistakes in the fight against Covid-19?"

The Economist

magazine asks this week

, when the planet is already close to a million deaths and the WHO recognizes that it can reach two million deaths in 2021. "The figure is unimaginable, but not impossible," said its director of Emergencies, Mike Ryan.

The second wave of the tsunami has already reached the European shores and the only way not to be engulfed by it is to launch a

blitzkrieg

: a

health and positive

blitzkrieg

.

The recent numbers of infected and dead in Europe confirm that those countries that take measures quickly, taking advantage of each day to test, track and prepare their hospitals are the ones that are winning the battle: see Italy or Germany.

Meanwhile, Portugal prepares its weapons and Spain does not leave the rear.

WHAT IS TO COME

The President of the European Council, Belgian Charles Michel, has abandoned his quarantine after testing negative his PCR, so the extraordinary European Council that had to be delayed can be held this Thursday.

A few days earlier, on Tuesday (early Wednesday morning in Spain), the first of the three debates to be held in the United States will take place between the Republican and Democratic candidates, Donald Trump and Joe Biden, respectively.

All a 'main course'.
