September 27, 2020Swiss voters have today rejected the initiative of the sovereign right to end the free movement of people with the EU. This is indicated by the first trends announced by the Gfs Bern institute shortly after the closing of the polling stations for the referendum.

The referendum in Switzerland for "moderate immigration" will be rejected with 63% of the no according to the first projection of SRG SSR on the result of the first object to be voted today. The margin of error is +/- 3%, the Gfs Bern institute said.

The question was dubbed the Swiss Brexit because it aimed to abolish the agreement for the free movement of people. This would have taken Switzerland out of the Schengen area, of which the Swiss Confederation is a part even though it is not a member of the EU.
