Macron gives Lebanon’s leaders weeks to form a government, and holds Hezbollah and the Amal Movement responsible for the crisis

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Sunday that he would not abandon his initiative to save Lebanon from collapse, saying he would give Lebanon's leaders another four to six weeks to form a government under the French initiative.

The French president said that he is "ashamed" of what the Lebanese leaders are doing and will increase pressure on them to change course.

The French president added that he “took note of the collective betrayal” of the Lebanese political class after its failure to form a government, in contravention of the pledges made on the first of September during his second visit to Lebanon.

Macron told a press conference in Paris that the Lebanese parties "bear full responsibility" for this failure.

Macron added that the political class in Lebanon has mortgaged the country, pointing out that "what happened in the past few days demonstrates that the Lebanese political class does not want to honor its commitments to France."

Macron said: The Lebanese political class has abandoned its obligations for the sake of its own interests, stressing that "the French road map is the only available option and is still on the table."

And he indicated that some wanted to strengthen the strength of their camp, not Lebanon's strength, by making the formation of the government a sectarian issue, indicating that "the new phase that we are entering is not dangerous for Lebanon only, but for the rest of the region."

The French President pointed out that "Hariri was wrong to add a sectarian element to the formation of the government."

The French President emphasized that the Amal Movement and "Hezbollah" caused the formation of the Lebanese government to falter.

"The Lebanese Hezbollah (shouldn't it believe it is stronger than it is)," he said.

He stressed that imposing sanctions on those who hindered the formation of the government in Lebanon will not be effective, and that it does not seem a good tool likely at this stage, but we do not exclude it in consultations with others at some point.
