In Italy only 40% of watercourses are in good ecological status, as required by the Water Framework Directive: "despite the urgent need to redevelop them, they continue to be damaged".

This was denounced by WWF on the occasion of the fifteenth edition of "World rivers Day", which is celebrated today to raise public awareness and encourage better management of waterways throughout the world.

Hydraulic maintenance or river management? ', Documents and therefore denounces the widespread and indiscriminate "legalized" attack on our rivers.

Almost everywhere, in fact, the environmental organization affirms, "the indiscriminate cutting of riparian vegetation and / or dredging of riverbeds with the excuse of making them safer continue to be authorized by the Regions. Actions in open conflict with European directives but also with the recent 'EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030' which states that 'we need to do more to restore freshwater ecosystems and the natural functions of rivers' ".

One way to do this is to remove or adapt the barriers that prevent the passage of migratory fish and to improve the free flow of sediments: this is to restore the free flow of at least 25,000 km of rivers by 2030.
