From our correspondent in Istanbul,

If
the fighting in the Nagorno-Karabakh region
were to degenerate into war, Ankara's choice would be clear:
Turkey
took up the cause of its
Turkish-speaking
“
brothers
” in Azerbaijan.
Turkish President
Recep Tayyip Erdogan
has promised them on his Twitter account the full support of "
the Turkish nation
", "
with all our means
" and "
as always
".
He had just spoken by telephone with his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev, whose "
wise and determined position
" he praised
.
"
One and the same nation
"
The Speaker of the Turkish Parliament, Mustafa Sentop, accused Armenia of being "a
terrorist state
" and a "
threat to peace in the whole region
".
As for the Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mevlüt Cavusoglu, he had a telephone interview with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, to discuss what Ankara qualifies as “
Armenian aggression
”.
No wonder this position is taken.
Turkey is Azerbaijan's closest ally and the two states consider themselves to be "
one and the same nation
".
Conversely, diplomatic relations between Turkey and Armenia are non-existent and the border between the two countries has been closed since the beginning of the 1990s, precisely as a sign of support for Baku in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
