A premature baby

died last January and another suffered sequelae

due to a medical error registered in the Neonatal Unit of the Donostia University Hospital where they were given an

anesthetic instead of the serum

that corresponded to them for two days.

The Basque Health Service (Osakidetza) has recognized the change in medications in a

report that has been delivered to the families

of the little Yara, who was born on November 21 with 800 gamos of weight at 25 weeks of gestation and has managed to survive but with sequels, and Ane, who was born on December 27, with 600 grams in week 24 and who died on January 8, El Diario Vasco reported this Sunday.

According to the publication, it was the

professionals in the Neonatology area

who realized and communicated to the parents that a pharmacological error had occurred.

The two little girls had been in the incubator since birth and had shown a "lively and vital" change of attitude and a

great decline since January 2

, the date on which it is suspected that the mistake could have been made with the drugs.

Little Yara, who at the moment needs a permanent oxygen probe although the extent of the sequelae left by the anesthetic is unknown, had

previously

undergone

three operations for different problems

, but had come back, while Ane had evolved well and even began to tolerate breast milk.

On January 5, the professionals at the hospital in the Gipuzkoan capital detected that something had happened and suspected that it

had been a change in medication

, since the anesthetic and food packaging are very similar.

However, the lawyer for the families indicates in the claim that he has presented to Osakidetza that it is an

"unjustifiable error"

since the anesthetic supplied "has a special circuit for its dispensing and must be authorized by the anesthetist."

In addition, it is not allowed for children under three years of age, so the lawyer asks

"what was this substance doing in a neonatal unit"

.

The families claim compensation ranging from

150,000 euros for each of the parents

of the deceased baby, 400,000 for the girl who has survived and 60,000 for her mother.
