25 people were killed in the crash of a military plane in northeastern Ukraine on Friday, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the accident as a "terrible tragedy."

Earlier on Friday, it was announced that a military aircraft "Antonov-26" had been shot down in the Kharkiv region, northeastern Ukraine.

A statement issued by the Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office said that investigations had been launched to uncover the circumstances of the army plane crash.

The statement indicated that the accident resulted in the death of 25 people, in addition to the injury of two people who were seriously injured.

Deputy Interior Minister Anton Gerashenko described the accident as "shocking", and announced that an investigation was underway to clarify its causes.

Video footage posted on social media showed smoke was still rising from the wreckage.

The plane was carrying students from the Kharkiv Aviation University of the Ukrainian Armed Forces when the accident occurred near the military airport in the northeastern Chujuyev region.

The plane crashed while landing at 09:55 pm local time (18:55 GMT).

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the accident as a "terrible tragedy," adding that he would move to Kharkiv on Saturday.

"We are urgently forming a committee to investigate all the circumstances and causes of the tragedy," he wrote on Facebook.
