Humanity was caught by the coronavirus "while it was taking a nap" and "struggled to recover with agonizing slowness".

This was stated by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, speaking by videoconference at the work of the 75th General Assembly of the UN.

To ensure that the whole world is up to other global health crises, the premier announced the UK's commitment to pay £ 340 million to the World Health Organization over the next four years - a 30 per cent increase from to the previous four years, which makes Great Britain one of the largest donors.

However, Johnson, who likened vaccine research efforts to a "giant global obstacle course," warned of the risks that can come from haste.

"While we are looking for a vaccine, we must never take shortcuts, streamline the test phase or sacrifice safety for speed," said the British premier.

"It would be an absolute tragedy - he added - if in our anxiety we gave a hand to the madmen, the no vaxes, the dangerous obsessives, who campaign against vaccines and put millions of lives at risk".

Government expert: We will have 100 deaths a day within a month

The UK can expect 100 deaths a day within three to four weeks, according to one of the government's scientific advisors, infectious disease modeling expert Graham Medley, who participates in the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage).

"The treatments have improved - he told BBC Radio 4 -, the way the virus is spreading will be different, but inevitably there will be an increase. The things we do now will not prevent 100 people from dying every day, but they will prevent much higher numbers ".
