From our special correspondent in Bamako,
Florence Morice
Gathered at the Bamako International Conference Center, the president of the transition of Mali, Bah N'Daw, and the vice-president,
Assimi Goïta
, head of the junta that overthrew the former head of state Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, were sworn in this Friday.
The ceremony started late
The solemn ceremony started a little late due to the presence of a surprise guest: the President of Guinea-Bissau,
Umaro Sissoco Embalo
.
He is the only foreign head of state present.
It was difficult to imagine another scenario, given the sanctions which have still not been lifted, an African diplomat explained to us Thursday evening.
An important step
The mediator of the
ECOWAS
, Goodluck Jonathan, in Bamako for two days is also present, as well as several European diplomats for the taking of the oath.
This investiture marks an important stage since it is supposed to open the beginning of a transition which should last eighteen months and ultimately lead to new elections.
