The Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai stated that it has applied smart solutions to address the challenges posed by the Coronavirus pandemic to the transport and public transport sector, including activating live broadcast cameras to monitor the number of passengers on its buses, to ensure the application of social distancing.

The solutions also included technologies that could be adopted in the application of preventive measures inside school buses, and innovative projects in the autonomous vehicle sector, indicating that they place the safety of passengers at the top of its priorities.

The executive director of the Public Transportation Corporation at the authority, Ahmed Bahruzian, told «Emirates Today» that the authority has studied some solutions to face the challenges posed by the Corona pandemic, to benefit from them in implementing preventive measures on school buses in order to ensure control over them, in a way that guarantees safety for students. Pointing to studying the implementation of innovative projects, the most important of which is the autonomous vehicle projects, in which Dubai has made great strides in implementing the technical and operational experiments required before adopting a safe and efficient means of transportation.

Bahrozian stated that reducing the capacity of public transport, which is an essential need for a large segment of the population, was one of the main challenges facing public transport operators worldwide.

He explained that with the start of the pandemic, challenges have emerged related to the transport sector, some of which are temporary and others that extend for several months to come, such as the financial impact of all operators in the world due to the decrease in the number of trips.

The other challenge is the application of preventive measures and sterilization measures, which in turn led to a decrease in the number of passengers and consequently a decline in the financial returns of transportation by up to 90% in some cities of the world, according to a report on the future of transport issued by the Dubai Future Foundation, in cooperation with the Dubai Transport Council in late Last July.

Bahruzian added that reducing the working hours of public buses and stopping transport buses across cities to make way for the application of an intensive sterilization program in various facilities, posed a challenge in covering operational costs.

However, the authority's concern remained focused on adhering to preventive measures.

As for the solutions implemented by the authority to meet these challenges, he said that they included keeping the air-conditioned passenger waiting stations closed to ensure that they are not crowded, providing backup buses to support the stations crowded with passengers, and holding awareness workshops on how to prevent the virus, including drivers and departments of the corporation, in addition to follow-up and communication With taxi and school bus companies regarding the need to take preventive measures, and to follow the instructions of the Ministry of Health and Community Protection and the relevant health authorities in the country, to avoid infection with the virus.

Confronting the Corona outbreak

The Executive Director of the Public Transport Corporation at the Roads and Transport Authority, Ahmed Bahruzian, stated that the authority has conducted studies that confirmed the existence of challenges facing institutions and bodies concerned with transport and public transport in the world, including Dubai, the most important of which is the absence of global standards to confront the spread of the virus through public transport, and the increasing need To carry out trips that take place through flexible means of transportation such as bicycles and other means, as well as the need for self-driving vehicles, which prompted the Authority's efforts to formulate future directions for the next stage, and update scenarios to suit the current and future situation.
