September 25, 2020The curve of coronavirus infections in Spain advances unstoppable: 76,441 new infections in the last week.

The Ministry of Health reported 12,274 more cases today than Thursday's figures, 4,122 of which were diagnosed with the swab.

The health impact of these new infections does not reach the levels recorded last spring, but the pressure in hospitals is beginning to alarm the Spanish government.

Currently 40% of the beds in Madrid hospitals are occupied by coronavirus patients.

The incidence of cases in Spain - 282 cases per 100,000 inhabitants - has contracted slightly in the last three days, but remains at extremely high levels, double compared to mid-August.

Since the start of the pandemic, the Ministry of Health has reported 716,481 people infected with coronavirus and 31,232 deaths --114 more than this Thursday - although these figures could be higher because the government calculates in its statistics only people with a diagnostic test which confirms the infection.

The Madrid regional government has today decided to extend the measures that currently limit the mobility of over 850,000 inhabitants to 167,381 more people (eight health zones), to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The deputy regional councilor for public health, Antonio Zapatero, announced the measures and insisted that all Madrid citizens, even those who are not within the 45 health areas affected by the measure, must begin to "avoid all unnecessary travel ".

At the political level, there is a split between the central government and the Community of Madrid, led by an exponent of the Popular Party.

Moncloa has asked for stricter measures for the capital with the closure of the whole territory.

Measure that was sent back to the sender by the local government.
