A 19-year-old man was sentenced by the Béziers correctional court (Hérault) to 3 years in prison, for violence committed against 8 police officers, during his arrest, on August 15, in the Hérault sub-prefecture .

He was tried for aggravated violence, death threats and insults against persons holding public authority, rebellion, and attempted theft.

The young man, when he was a minor, had been sentenced by the Béziers children's court to three years in prison, including six months suspended, for aggravated thefts.

He was released from prison on July 18, after serving the firm part of his sentence.

Steal cigarettes

On August 15, the young man, heavily alcoholic, had entered a tobacco shop in downtown Béziers in order to steal cigarettes.

The tobacconist managed to scare him away and called the police.

The police had managed to stop him after suffering violence and threats.

Two of them had been taken to hospital, one suffering from a probable sprained knee and the other having been bitten in the arm.

At the time of his placement in a sobering-up cell, he had uttered new insults, committed further violence on two police officers, and repeatedly shouted "Allah Akbar".

During his hearing, he had tried to break out of the window.
