The project of the future Porte Maillot (16, 17th arrondissement) -

Mairie de Paris / Demain Matin

  • Porte Maillot "is a huge roundabout which will become a real living space with green spaces", summarizes Emmanuel Grégoire, Anne Hidalgo's first assistant.

  • A meeting between elected officials took place this Tuesday evening and the restitution meeting of this public participation will be held on November 24.

  • The City of Paris plans to start work in 2021, for delivery of public spaces at the end of 2023, ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Towards a major facelift for Porte Maillot in Paris?

Initiated in 2016, the redevelopment of this square in the north-west of Paris, located in the 16th and 17th arrondissements, is accelerating.

Since September 16, a public consultation has been open to all.

Goal ?

Bring up proposals, observations and remarks in order to think about the public spaces of Porte Maillot.

This Electronic Public Participation (PPVE) is open until October 25.

"It is a consultation of a compulsory nature to prepare the compatibility of the local urban plan (PLU) and the issuance of a permit for the development of public spaces which is necessary", assures

, Emmanuel Grégoire , first assistant to Anne Hidalgo and in charge of town planning.

This vast renovation program, which has several aspects and which is to become a strategic site for the Olympic Games, goes on long in favor of what is initially a vulgar roundabout.

A roundabout around which cars turn and on which in another era rabbits frolicked.

"A reappropriation of public space"

In August 2016, 150 trees were first cut down on this famous crossroads located between the Palais des Congrès and the Parodi square.

The goal: to prepare the site of the future Eole station which should see the light of day as an extension of the RER E. The same year, extensive work led the workers to dig 30 meters underground.

At the same time, the project for the complete redevelopment of the square began to get under way.

So much upheaval of which the famous rabbits who had taken up residence on the roundabout were the collateral victims, to finally find relative peace in the greenhouses of Auteuil.

But now, what are the transformations to come in this place?

“It's a huge roundabout that will become a real living space with green spaces,” says Emmanuel Grégoire.

The goal of the Porte Maillot redevelopment project is to transform the roundabout into the new Place du Grand Paris.

A new road, aligned with the avenues of the Grande-Armée and the General-de-Gaulle, will reconstitute the major historical axis which links the Place de la Concorde to the Grande Arche de La Défense.

Opposite the Palais des congrès, the new square will have to accommodate the multiple existing and developing modes of transport (RER E, metro, bus, tram) and will open a new square to pedestrians.

Finally, the extension of Bois de Boulogne and Square Parodi will significantly increase the proportion of green spaces in the project.

And this, with the creation of a garden.

“Porte Maillot is currently a very inhospitable place.

This will allow a real reappropriation of public space, ”notes Emmanuel Grégoire.

An underground bus station is also planned.

"One of the major accommodation centers for international delegations"

Porte Maillot must also become a strategic site for the 2024 Olympic Games by serving as an axis towards the Concorde site while becoming a major accommodation location.

“It will be one of the major accommodation centers for international delegations,” explains Emmanuel Grégoire.

Pending the restitution meeting of this public participation which will be held on November 24, a public meeting was held this Tuesday evening with all the deputies of the town hall concerned but also the elected representatives of the arrondissements.

"We hope to start work before the second half of 2021 for delivery at the end of 2023 at the latest, so as to let the project mature before its full deployment on the occasion of the Olympic Games", promises the deputy of Anne Hidalgo.

Present at the meeting, the mayor (LR) of the 17th arrondissement, Geoffroy Boulard, welcomed the redevelopment of the Porte Maillot in place and “Olympic gate” but expressed some fears.

“There is a political consensus on the extension of the Bois de Boulogne for example, but I would like the avenue de la Grande-Armée to be quickly integrated into the overall project.

It is the great forgotten ”, explains to

, the councilor who intends to create a Grande-Armée committee with architects and residents.

And to conclude: "I also have fears about the traffic plan with the entry of mobility into Paris and a risk of congestion".
