Kiel (AP) - The German handball record master THW Kiel has received the first defeat in the Champions League.
There was an unexpected 27:35 (12:15) defeat against the French representative HBC Nantes.
The best throwers in front of the 1523 spectators in the Kiel Arena were Sander Sagosen, Hendrik Pekeler, Niclas Ekberg and Magnus Landin with four goals each for Kiel and Valero Rivera with ten goals for the French.
It took the Kielers a few minutes to get rid of their initial nervousness.
The team of THW coach Filip Jicha did not play properly afterwards.
The French took advantage of the simple ball losses and technical inadequacies of the hosts.
In the middle of the first half, Nantes was 10: 6 (18th) in the lead.
With a saved seven meter at 10:13 (27th), Kiel's goalkeeper Dario Quenstedt set a sign, but it failed to work.
Even when the "Zebras" played twice in double majority after the break, they did not make any significant capital out of it.
Guest goalkeeper Emil Nielsen gave Nantes the decisive support.
The North Germans now only have one day to gather new strength.
Already on Saturday (8 p.m. / Sky Sport News) it is in Düsseldorf against the big north rival SG Flensburg-Handewitt for the Supercup.
