24 September 2020The European Union refuses to recognize Alexander Lukashenko as the president of Belarus.

This was announced by the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, arguing that "the so-called inauguration" of the new mandate on 23 September "lack any democratic legitimacy".

"The elections of 9 August were neither free nor fair", reads the note released by the EU's High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy.

"The EU does not recognize falsified results. Consequently, the so-called inauguration of 23 September and the new mandate claimed by Alexander Lukashenko have no democratic legitimacy" and "directly contradict the will of large segments of the Belarusian population".

The European Union says it is "struck and moved by the courage of the Belarusian people who continue to demonstrate peacefully for democracy and for their fundamental rights, despite the brutal repression of the authorities": the Union's applause for peaceful protest marches in the cities comes from the High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy, Josep Borrell.
